The problem

Most school print rooms run on improvised systems.

Email threads, spreadsheets, sticky notes. It works until it doesn't - and students are always left wondering what happened to their print.

Files arrive by email

Students email STL files with varying filenames and no context. Requests get buried in a busy inbox or simply disappear.

No visibility for students

Students have no idea if their file was received, whether it's approved, or when it will be printed. They ask the same questions over and over.

Nothing is tracked

Without a proper system there's no log of what was printed, when, or by whom. Reporting on usage or output becomes guesswork.

How it works

From submission to print, in four steps.

A structured, transparent workflow for students and teachers - with no app installs and no student accounts.

Student

Student submits

Students upload their STL file and email address through your school's unique submission page. No account needed - it just works.

Teacher

You receive an email with the file attached. Approve or reject with a single click - no dashboard login required to take action.

Printer

Print is started

Download the file, send it to your printer, and mark it as printing. The student is notified automatically that their print has started.

Student

Student tracks progress

Students follow their print via a personal tracking link sent by email. They get notified the moment it's ready to collect.

Student

Print complete

When you mark the print as complete, the student gets an automatic email letting them know it's ready to collect. No chasing, no guessing.

Tracking

Real-time progress for students.
No chasing.

The moment a request is approved, the student gets a personal tracking link by email. That page shows their print's status in real time - Queued, Printing, or Ready to collect. When a Bambu printer is connected, they see live percentage and time remaining automatically.

Personal tracking link sent by email when a request is approved
Live status: Queued → Printing → Ready to collect
Print progress bar with time remaining when Bambu is connected
Completion email sent the moment the print is marked done
Bambu integration

Student tracking updates itself.
You do nothing extra.

Include the request ID in the Bambu job name - for example PR-42_phone_stand. MakerCommand recognises the ID, links the job, and the student's tracking page starts showing live progress from Bambu Cloud.

Name the Bambu job with the request ID - MakerCommand auto-links it
Student's tracking page shows live percentage and time remaining
When the job finishes, the student gets a "ready to collect" email automatically
Queue

Manage all requests from
a single dashboard.

When you want more than inbox management, the dashboard shows every pending, printing, and completed request in one list. Assign jobs to specific printers, see what's running on each machine, and co-manage with other teachers from one account.

See all active print requests at a glance - pending, printing, done
Multiple teachers can access the same dashboard
Assign jobs to specific printers and track them individually
Download STL files directly from the dashboard for each request
Records

Full print history.
Useful every term.

Every submission, approval decision, and completed print is logged with timestamps and student details. At the end of each term you have a complete record - useful for material usage reporting, budget justification, or safeguarding queries.

Bambu Lab integration

Students see live progress. You do nothing extra.

When you send a job to your Bambu printer, include the request ID in the job name - for example PR-42_phone_stand. MakerCommand spots the ID automatically, links the job, and the student's tracking page starts showing live progress from Bambu Cloud.

No manual status updates - the printer reports percentage and time remaining directly
Student's personal tracking page updates in real time without any teacher involvement
When the job finishes on the printer, the student gets a "ready to collect" email automatically
Works with Bambu X1-Carbon, P1S, P1P, A1, and A1 Mini via Bambu Cloud

Two ways to manage

Run it by email, or use the dashboard. Your choice.

Most teachers use one or the other. Many use both depending on the day. Either way, students experience exactly the same workflow.

Email-only

Manage everything from your inbox. No login ever.

If you'd rather not open a separate app, you don't have to. The entire teacher workflow - from new request to completion - happens through emails with single-click action links.

1 Student submits a file - you get an email with the STL attached
2 Click Approve or Reject in the email - done in one click, no login required
3 Download the STL from the email, name the Bambu job with the request ID, start printing
4 Bambu Cloud updates the student's tracking page live - you don't need to touch anything
5 Student gets a "ready to collect" email when the job finishes on the printer
Many teachers run their printers this way. The dashboard exists if you want it - but it's entirely optional.
Online dashboard

See everything in one place. Useful for busy labs.

When you have multiple printers running or several teachers sharing the queue, the dashboard gives you a full picture of what's happening across the room.

1 Log in once - see every pending, printing, and completed request in a single list
2 Approve or reject directly from the dashboard - or still from email, both work
3 Assign jobs to specific printers and see which machine is printing what
4 Live Bambu progress shown per request - percentage and time remaining, no refreshing
5 Invite co-teachers - each gets their own login and can manage the queue independently
Ideal when multiple classes use the same printers, or when a technician manages the queue alongside teaching staff.
Testimonials

Used by schools and makerspaces across the UK.

What teachers and technicians say after switching to MakerCommand EDU.

"We run a 3D printing programme in a secondary school. The EDU mode is exactly what we needed - students submit via a shared link, I approve by email without needing to log in anywhere. No new software for teachers to learn. Really well thought through."

JP
James P.
Design & Technology teacher, Secondary school

"Our technician used to spend the first 20 minutes of every morning sorting out the print queue. Now students self-serve through the form and we just work through the approvals. Bambu integration means the status updates without any manual effort at all."

MH
Mrs H.
Head of DT, Academy trust school

"We run an open makerspace at a sixth-form college. Students come in, submit a file, and can track it from their phone. The live progress bar during printing is a surprisingly big deal - it stops them coming up every five minutes to ask."

SR
Sam R.
Makerspace lead, Sixth-form college

"I set it up in an afternoon. The trial is genuinely free with no card required. By the next morning I already had the first student requests coming in. It's just a clean, sensible system that does what it says."

Tom K.
Computing teacher, Independent school

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

No. Students just visit your school's submission page, upload their file, enter their name and email address, and submit. There are no passwords, no accounts, and nothing to install. This is by design - the fewer barriers for students, the better.
When a student submits a file, you receive an email with the STL attachment and the student's details. The email contains two buttons: Approve and Reject. Clicking either one takes action immediately - no login required. If you prefer to manage requests through the dashboard, that's available too.
MakerCommand EDU integrates directly with Bambu Lab printers - the X1-Carbon, P1S, P1P, A1, and A1 Mini - via the Bambu Cloud API. This gives live print progress and automatic status updates. For any other printer brand, you can manage the queue manually using the dashboard and mark jobs as printing or complete yourself.
When a request is approved, the student receives an email with a unique personal tracking link. This page shows the current status of their print in real time - Queued, Printing (with a progress bar if a Bambu printer is connected), or Ready to collect. They also receive an email the moment the print is marked as complete.
Yes - on the School and Pro plans you can invite multiple teachers. Each teacher gets their own login and can view the queue, approve or reject requests, and manage prints. On the free Starter plan, only a single teacher account is supported.
Yes. The Starter plan is free forever with no credit card required - just sign up and start using it. The School and Pro plans include a 14-day free trial so you can use every feature before deciding to subscribe. If you have students submitting requests on the first day of your trial, that counts as a good sign.
Yes. Schools often need to go through a formal procurement process. Email us at [email protected] and we will provide a quote and accept payment by purchase order or bank transfer. We understand school finance processes and will work with you to make it straightforward.
